Changes to Student Payments

As part of the 2014-15 Budget, the Government has announced a number of changes to student payments (subject to the passage of legislation), including:

  • removing the Relocation Scholarship for students relocating within and between major cities from 1 January 2015;
  • limiting the 6 week portability period for student payments from 1 October 2014;
  • freezing the indexation of the personal income free area of student payments (currently at $415 per fortnight) and the student income bank (currently $10,300) from 1 January 2015 for three years; and
  • removing the grandfathering of payments of the Student Start-up Scholarship from 1 January 2015.

The 2013-14 Budget measure to convert the Student Start-up Scholarship into an income contingent loan will also be implemented from 1 January 2015, subject to the passage of legislation.
