Support for students
FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans students
A tuition assurance scheme has been put in place by the Government to support and protect students. TAFE Directors Australia administers the tuition assurance scheme for Careers Australia’s FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and VET Student Loans students.
For FEE-HELP students, the tuition assurance scheme provides a mechanism to give currently enrolled students the option to complete their course at another provider, or request to have their FEE-HELP debt remitted for commenced but uncompleted units of study.
For VET FEE-HELP students, the tuition assurance scheme provides a mechanism to give currently enrolled students the option to complete their course at another provider, or request to have their VET FEE-HELP debt remitted for commenced but uncompleted units of study.
For VET Student Loans students, the tuition assurance operator will seek to match and offer students a similar, replacement course. If there is no similar course available, the student may be eligible for fee-repayment.
TAFE Directors Australia will make arrangements for students to exercise their rights under tuition assurance. Students with any queries can contact TAFE Directors Australia (TDA) at TDA [at] tafe.qld.edu.au or on (07) 3307 4789. Students can contact the Department of Education and Training on 1800 020 108.
International students are protected by the Tuition Protection Service (TPS) administered by my department. The TPS provides assistance to students to continue their studies with another provider or to get a refund of their unspent tuition fee. International students with any concerns can contact the TPS on 1300 980 434.
Students who are studying with Careers Australia as an apprentice can contact their Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider. Details can be found here: www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/find-my-aasn/full-list.
Apprentices can call the Australian Apprenticeships Referral line on 13 38 73 for details of their Network Provider if they are unsure who this is.
Alternatively apprentices can contact their relevant State Government Training Authority.
VET in Schools
If a ‘VET in Schools’ secondary student has undertaken VET at school and has taken out VET FEE-HELP or a VET Student Loan, TAFE Directors Australia will provide assistance. In other cases, support for students would be expected to be available through their schools and parents.
State subsidised students
State subsidised students should contact their State Government for advice.
Students in receipt of benefits can contact the Department of Human Services’ ‘Youth and Students’ contact number which is 13 24 90. Staff will be able to discuss individual students’ situation with them in detail, and consider what the most appropriate course of action is.
